Energy Production
At ROMONTA, we focus on energy efficiency and sustainability. Our goal is to ensure the complete energy supply of our production site without the direct use of fossil energy sources in the future.
CO2-Saving montan wax production
Since 1922, ROMONTA has been producing its main product, raw montan wax, through extraction which we requires a lot of electric and thermic energy. In the past, this energy demand was met by the thermal recovery of coal that was left over after wax extraction. In future, we aim to eliminate the combustion of left-over coal to ensure a CO2-neutral montan wax production process. To achieve this, it is essential to fully meet the energy needs of the site by an alternative, non-coal-based energy source.
Production of sustainable energy at ROMONTA
In 2005 and 2009, two steam generators based on alternative fuel were already commissioned. They totally combust approximately 120,000 tons of alternative fuel (EBS) annually, covering about half of the site's energy requirements. By commissioning a new steam generator in 2024 and the expansion of renewable capacities for alternative fuel, ROMONTA is taking significant steps toward CO2-neutral production. This emphasizes ROMONTA’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and our ongoing efforts to optimize value creation through the reintegration of resources into the business cycle.
Alternative fuels as a basis
ROMONTA has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection through the continuous development of innovative reintegration processes aimed at resource conservation. Since 2009, WAE Wertstoffaufbereitung GmbH Edersleben has been part of the ROMONTA group. WAE manages the entire process chain , including sorting, processing, and recycling of waste. ROMONTA further completes this cycle by thermally recovering the remaining alternative fuels. This approach fully complies with the Recycling Law and actively contributes to the optimization of our value creation processes through the reintegration of resources into the economic cycle.
Investments in renewable energies
The entire energy supply system in Germany is facing a fundamental transformation. Renewable energies are becoming a more and more important part of the overall power supply. The industrial site in Amsdorf offers excellent conditions for generating power from wind and solar energy. In the past years, modern wind and solar power plants were established on our mining sites.
